Pushing the Boundaries of Wind Farm Design Modelling

Recently, Youwind had the privilege of hosting a key milestone in the SUDOCO project: a two-day consortium meeting that brought together some of Europe’s leading academic and industry experts in wind energy. Representatives from TU DelftDTUTUM, and other partners joined us in Barcelona to align on research progress and take crucial steps toward shaping the control room of the future. 

This meeting wasn’t just a project update — it was a vivid reminder of how collaborative, multidisciplinary innovation is pushing the limits of what wind farm modelling can achieve. 

 
 

What is SUDOCO? 

SUDOCO (Smart and sUstainable wind farm Design and Operation through Collaborative cOntrol) is a cutting-edge research initiative funded by the European Union’s Horizon Europe Programme (Grant Agreement 101122256). The project aims to develop advanced control strategies for wind farms that go far beyond energy output alone. 

SUDOCO introduces a holistic view to wind farm optimization — one that integrates technical performance, economic feasibility, and environmental impact. It reflects a broader industry shift towards responsible and future-proof energy management, where decisions are driven not only by power generation, but also by sustainability and long-term system resilience. 

Led by Professor Jan-Willem van Wingerden from TU Delft, the consortium is composed of a multidisciplinary group of partners that includes TU Delft,  DTUTUM, Youwind Renewables, Politecnico di MilanoShellSowento and Icons. Together, they bring expertise in engineering, environmental science, digital innovation, and industry application — ensuring that the solutions developed are scientifically robust, technically viable, and socially relevant. 

 
 

Research that Moves the Industry Forward 

The discussions during the Barcelona meeting covered a wide range of advanced research areas that will shape the next generation of wind energy tools: 

  • Validation of latest wake models, adapted to the realities of today's turbine configurations and layouts. 
  • Comparison of low-fidelity models with high-resolution LES simulations, to balance computational efficiency with accuracy. 
  • Integration of load estimates into early-stage site assessment, ensuring that structural integrity and cost-effectiveness are part of every location decision. 

These innovations, once transferred to operational tools, will enable more reliable, accurate, and bankable decisions across the wind farm development lifecycle. 

 
 

Youwind’s Role in SUDOCO

Our team is leading the integration of the diverse new modelling components generated by academic partners into a common digital framework. Developing a new holistic framework to capture the requirements of future wind farms.
